The 36 Channels in Human Design

Channels connect bodygraph centers and define your fixed gifts. Complete guide to all 36 channels — individual, tribal and collective circuits.

At a Glance

A channel is a complete connection between two bodygraph centers — formed when both gates at each end are activated. Channels are your fixed gifts: energies that operate permanently, independent of external conditioning. There are 36 channels in total, organized into 3 major circuits reflecting three fundamental modes of human experience.

The 3 Circuits

Individual Circuit — Mutation

The individual circuit carries the energy of difference. People with individual channels are here to mutate — to bring something new, different, that didn't exist before. This energy is melancholic by nature: it operates in cycles of inspiration and emptiness, and cannot be forced.

Signature: "I know, but I can't explain how I know."

Tribal Circuit — Bonding

The tribal circuit carries the energy of mutual support. This is the circuit of family, business, community — everything that works through exchange: "I give to you, you give to me." Tribal channels create concrete, physical, material bonds.

Signature: "Is this good for my tribe?"

Collective Circuit — Sharing

The collective circuit carries the energy of sharing with all. It divides into two sub-circuits:

  • Logic (understanding): recognizing patterns, creating reproducible formulas, projecting into the future
  • Abstract (sensing): living experiences, extracting meaning, telling stories

Signature: "This is true for everyone, not just me."

Individual Channels (11 channels)

ChannelGatesCenters ConnectedGift
1-8Self-G ↔ ThroatCreative inspiration — the role model who inspires by example
2-14Self-G ↔ SacralLife direction — knowing where to go and having the energy to get there
3-60Sacral ↔ RootMutation — the energy to transform what exists into something new
10-20Self-G ↔ ThroatAwakening — being fully yourself in the present moment
10-34Self-G ↔ SacralExploration — following your convictions with power
12-22Throat ↔ Solar PlexusOpenness — emotional expression that touches others
25-51Self-G ↔ Heart/EgoInitiation — the courage to be first, the shock that awakens
28-38Spleen ↔ RootStruggle — finding meaning in life through challenges
34-20Sacral ↔ ThroatCharisma — thinking and acting in the moment (Manifesting Generator channel)
39-55Root ↔ Solar PlexusEmoting — the provocation that frees the spirit
43-23Ajna ↔ ThroatStructuring — hearing a new idea and formulating it

Tribal Channels (9 channels)

5-15Sacral ↔ Self-GRhythm — synchronizing natural rhythms with community
19-49Root ↔ Solar PlexusSynthesis — sensitivity to tribal needs, revolution when needs aren't met
21-45Heart/Ego ↔ ThroatMoney — the channel of material leadership and resource control
26-44Heart/Ego ↔ SpleenTransmission — tribal memory, the talent for selling what has proven itself
27-50Sacral ↔ SpleenPreservation — caring for others, responsibility and values
32-54Spleen ↔ RootTransformation — the ambition to rise and the ability to recognize potential
37-40Solar Plexus ↔ Heart/EgoCommunity — the emotional contract: love in exchange for support
44-26Spleen ↔ Heart/Ego(see 26-44)
45-21Throat ↔ Heart/Ego(see 21-45)

Note: some channels appear twice because they are identified by both gates. The actual number is 7 unique tribal channels.

Collective Channels — Logic (7 channels)

7-31Self-G ↔ ThroatAlpha — leadership through logic, influencing direction
9-52Sacral ↔ RootConcentration — the ability to focus and stay still

Format Channels (4 channels)

These channels directly connect the Root to motor centers and manage the basic energy format:

How to Read Your Channels

Complete Channel (defined)

When you have both gates of a channel activated (by the Sun, Moon, nodes or planets in your chart), the channel is defined. This is a reliable, constant energy — a gift you carry your entire life.

A defined channel:

  • Connects two centers (which also become defined)
  • Functions independently of other people
  • Represents a non-negotiable trait of your design

Half Channel (one gate only)

When you have only one gate activated, the other end is "open." You carry the channel's potential, but it fully activates only in the presence of someone with the complementary gate — this is electromagnetism, the basis of relational chemistry in HD.

No Gates

If neither gate is activated, the channel is completely open. You amplify that channel's energy when with someone who has it defined, but it's not your own energy.

Channels and Types

Channels indirectly determine your type:

  • If a channel connects to the Sacral → you have a defined Sacral → you're a Generator or Manifesting Generator
  • If a channel connects the Sacral to the Throat (directly or via motor centers) → Manifesting Generator
  • If no channel touches the Sacral but a channel connects a motor center to the Throat → Manifestor
  • If no channel touches the Sacral and no motor center connects to the Throat → Projector
  • If no center is defined → Reflector

Neurodiversity and Channels

Certain channels resonate particularly with neuroatypical profiles:

  • Channel 43-23 (Structuring/Insight): common in gifted people — the experience of "knowing" without being able to explain the logical path. Socially frustrating, but it's a mutation gift.
  • Channel 12-22 (Openness): HSPs with this channel experience intense emotional waves they transform into creative expression. The key is waiting for the right mood, not forcing it.
  • Channel 3-60 (Mutation): this channel's energy works in unpredictable pulses — very similar to the ADHD experience. It's not an attention deficit, it's a mutation mechanic.
  • Channel 28-38 (Struggle): multipotentialites recognize themselves here — the constant search for meaning through new challenges.

Connection with Shinkofa

The Shinkofa questionnaire identifies your defined channels and crosses them with your MBTI and neurodiversity profile to reveal synergies and tensions. For example, an INTJ Projector with channel 43-23 lives a double layer of insights — Ni (MBTI) + individual knowing channel (HD). Shizen uses these crossings to personalize recommendations: a dominant tribal channel with an introverted MBTI creates a need for intimate tribe — not broad networking.
