What is a signature strength?
All 24 VIA strengths belong to you to varying degrees. But among them, 5 to 7 stand out: they are so fundamentally yours that they define who you are, how you think, and what gives you energy. These are your signature strengths.
The concept was formalized by Martin Seligman in Authentic Happiness (2002), then deepened with Christopher Peterson. The core idea: lasting well-being does not come from correcting your weaknesses, but from intentionally using your signature strengths in your daily life.
The 3 criteria of a signature strength
Peterson and Seligman identified 3 criteria that distinguish a signature strength from other strengths. A signature strength is:
1. Essential — "This is really me"
When you use this strength, you feel a deep sense of authenticity. You are not playing a role — you are fully yourself. If someone told you to stop using this strength, you would feel diminished.
Example: a person with Curiosity as a signature strength cannot "switch off" their curiosity. They do not force themselves to be interested in things — they are naturally interested.
2. Energizing — "It gives me energy"
Using this strength does not exhaust you. Even if the activity is intense or difficult, you feel alive, engaged, and recharged afterward. Some strengths you exercise well may drain you — those are not signature strengths, they are skills.
Key distinction: a skill = "I can do it, but it empties me." A signature strength = "I can do it AND it fills me up."
3. Effortless — "It flows naturally"
Using this strength does not require conscious willpower. It manifests spontaneously across many different situations. You do not need to remind yourself to use it — it is simply there.
How to identify your signature strengths
The direct path: the VIA Survey
The most reliable way to identify your signature strengths is the VIA Survey, freely available at viacharacter.org. The questionnaire has 96 items and takes about 15 minutes. Your free report gives you a ranking of all 24 strengths, from highest to lowest.
Important: the questionnaire identifies your current strengths, in your current life. It is not fixed — strengths can evolve over time, through experience and intentional work.
The reflective path: 5 questions to ask yourself
If you are not ready to take the questionnaire, these 5 questions point toward your signature strengths:

When do you feel most like yourself? In which situations do you think "yes, this is really me"?

What energizes rather than drains you? Think of flow moments, complete absorption.

What do people naturally recognize in you? Recurring compliments often point to your strengths.

What feels so natural to you that you can't understand why others don't do it? What seems "basic" to you is often your signature strength.

What were you already doing as a child, before learning what was "good" or "useful"? Signature strengths often have roots in childhood.
The others' path
Ask 5 people who know you well: "When you think of me at my best, what do you see?" Themes that recur across different people are often your signature strengths.
The difference between signature strengths and skills
This is one of the most common confusions. Here is a comparison:

Concrete example: you may excel at project management (a learned skill) while finding it draining. Your signature strength might be Creativity or Curiosity — which expresses itself in other contexts and fills you up.
Using your signature strengths daily
Research by Seligman and colleagues (notably the 2005 study on "5 ways to use your signature strengths in new ways") shows that intentional use of signature strengths reduces depressive symptoms and increases reported happiness, with measurable effects after 1 week and persisting 6 months later.
The "new use" principle
Using a strength in a new way — in a different context than usual — amplifies the effect. It is not repetitive use that matters, but awareness and novelty.
Example: if your signature strength is Kindness, you likely already express it in close relationships. Try applying it in an unusual context: with a stranger, in your work, toward yourself.
Daily integration
Some practical questions for each day:
- Morning: How can I use at least one of my signature strengths today?
- Evening: In which situations did I use my strengths? How did it go?
- Decisions: Facing a choice, which option allows me to use more of my signature strengths?
- Challenges: How can my signature strength help me navigate this difficulty?
Pitfalls to avoid
The ranking trap
Your signature strengths are your highest-ranked strengths in the VIA — but "high in your ranking" does not mean "never to be developed further." Even your signature strengths can be underused.
The overuse trap
Each signature strength can be overused. Bravery can become recklessness. Kindness can become self-loss. Curiosity can become scatter. The goal is not to use your strengths at full intensity constantly, but to calibrate them wisely.
The "other strengths are weaknesses" trap
Having 5 to 7 signature strengths does not mean that other strengths are weaknesses to correct. They are supporting strengths — they serve you, but they do not define you in the same fundamental way.
Signature strengths and life design
Knowing your signature strengths is a design tool, not a passive personality test. The question is not "who am I?" but "how do I build my life to use what gives me life as much as possible?"
This applies to work (job crafting), relationships (how I express love and connection), leisure (what genuinely restores me), and challenges (which signature strength is my resource in this difficulty).
Your signature strengths are your greatest asset. Not because they are "better" than others — but because they are authentically yours.
