The 12 Astrological Houses

If planets represent who we are and signs represent how we function, then houses represent where our life unfolds. They are the 12 domains of experience in which planetary energies express themselves in concrete, lived reality.

How Houses Are Formed

Houses are determined by the time and place of birth. Unlike signs, which are regular divisions of the zodiac, houses depend on the local horizon at the moment of birth. This is why birth time is essential for calculating a complete chart.

The cusp of the 1st house is the Ascendant — the point on the eastern horizon. The cusp of the 10th house is the Midheaven (MC) — the highest point in the sky.

Several house systems exist (Placidus, Koch, Whole Sign, etc.). Each astrological school has its preferences. What matters is using one system consistently.

House Classification

Angular Houses (1, 4, 7, 10)

Angular houses are the most powerful. They correspond to the four angles of the chart. Planets placed here have a particularly strong and visible influence.

  • House 1: identity, persona, body
  • House 4: roots, family, origin
  • House 7: relationships, partnerships
  • House 10: vocation, public reputation

Succedent Houses (2, 5, 8, 11)

Succedent houses follow the angles. They represent the stabilisation and consolidation of angular energies.

  • House 2: resources, values, money
  • House 5: creativity, play, children
  • House 8: transformation, inheritance, sexuality
  • House 11: groups, friends, collective ideals

Cadent Houses (3, 6, 9, 12)

Cadent houses are linked to movement, adaptation, and preparation for the next cycle.

  • House 3: communication, short travel, siblings
  • House 6: daily work, health, service
  • House 9: journeys, philosophy, higher learning
  • House 12: the unconscious, retreat, the hidden

The 12 Houses in Detail

House 1 — Identity

The first house is the house of the self. It begins at the Ascendant and represents how you present yourself to the world, your physical appearance, your persona, and your baseline vitality.

The sign on the 1st house cusp is the Ascendant — one of the most important points in the chart. It colours the entire visible personality. Planets in the 1st house express themselves directly and immediately in your relationship to yourself and others.

Domains: appearance, body, beginnings, temperament, first impressions.

House 2 — Resources

The second house represents everything you own and value: money, material possessions, but also innate talents and self-worth. It is the house of your relationship to the sensory body and to material security.

Planets here indicate your relationship to money and physical pleasures, as well as the domains where you build your security.

Domains: money, property, personal values, self-worth, natural talents.

House 3 — Communication

The third house governs close-range exchanges: speaking, writing, learning, and moving within your immediate environment. It is also the house of siblings, neighbours, and early education.

Domains: communication, learning, writing, short travel, siblings.

House 4 — Roots

The fourth house is the bottom of the sky — the lowest point of the chart, associated with origin, ancestors, family of origin, and home. It is also the house of private life and inner security.

The sign at the IC (Imum Coeli) reveals emotional roots and the nature of your most intimate inner world.

Domains: family, roots, home, inheritance, end of life.

House 5 — Creativity

The fifth house is the house of the playful heart. It governs creative expression, romantic love, children, play, pleasure, and everything you do for the pure joy of doing it.

Planets here indicate how and where you seek to express yourself and find joy.

Domains: creativity, romance, children, play, pleasure, performance.

House 6 — Service

The sixth house is the house of daily work, health, and service. It represents habits, routines, the relationship to the body, and the way you are useful in the world.

It is also linked to pets, colleagues, and employees.

Domains: health, work, routines, service, lifestyle habits, animals.

House 7 — Relationships

The seventh house sits directly opposite the first — it is the house of the other, of partnerships, and of face-to-face encounters. It governs marriage, professional associations, and also declared adversaries.

The sign on the 7th house cusp (the Descendant) often describes the qualities you seek in partners.

Domains: marriage, partnerships, associations, contracts, open adversaries.

House 8 — Transformation

The eighth house is one of the deepest. It governs everything related to death, rebirth, profound sexuality, inheritance, and shared resources. It is the house of radical transformation and of what is hidden.

Planets here speak of your relationship to power, vulnerability, and deep intimacy.

Domains: death, rebirth, sexuality, inheritance, shared resources, the occult.

House 9 — The Search for Meaning

The ninth house is the house of expansion and meaning. It governs distant travel, philosophy, religion, higher education, and the search for universal truths.

Planets here indicate how and where you seek to understand the Grand Whole.

Domains: travel, philosophy, religion, higher learning, foreign cultures, meaning.

House 10 — Vocation

The tenth house is one of the most visible. At the top of the chart, at the Midheaven, it governs vocation, public reputation, social status, and your place in the world.

Its sign and planets indicate the nature of your contribution to the world and how you are perceived publicly.

Domains: career, reputation, status, ambition, vocation, authority.

House 11 — Community

The eleventh house governs groups, friends, networks, collective ideals, and hopes for the future. It is the house of belonging to something larger than oneself.

Planets here indicate your relationship to collectives, causes, and friendship.

Domains: friends, groups, ideals, hopes, networks, humanitarianism.

House 12 — The Invisible

The twelfth house is the most mysterious. It governs what is hidden, repressed, or inaccessible to ordinary consciousness: the deep unconscious, retreat, contemplation, and also institutions (hospitals, prisons, monasteries).

It is also the house of karma, past lives, and mystical gifts. Planets here often act in subtle yet powerful ways, outside the individual's awareness.

Domains: the unconscious, retreat, institutions, spirituality, secrets, sacrifice.

Empty Houses: What Do They Mean?

An empty house (no planets) does not mean that life domain is absent or unimportant. It simply means that this area of life does not require particular attention or intense experience in this lifetime.

An empty house is read through its ruler (the planet governing the sign on its cusp). The position of this ruler in the chart indicates how that life domain expresses itself.

Most people have the majority of their houses empty — this is entirely normal.

Integrated House Reading

To read a house, cross three pieces of information:

  1. The sign on the cusp — the style or colour of that life domain
  2. Planets in the house — the energies directly activated there
  3. The house ruler — where the planet governing the cusp is located, and what it says

This triple reading goes far beyond simple sign identification. It reveals how a life domain concretely expresses itself and what its deeper themes are.
