Core Principle: Reduction

The fundamental rule of Pythagorean numerology is reduction: add the digits of a number until you reach a single digit between 1 and 9.

Example: 247 = 2 + 4 + 7 = 13 = 1 + 3 = 4

Exception: master numbers. The intermediate values 11, 22, and 33 are NOT reduced. These are master numbers that carry a higher vibration.

This rule applies at every step of calculation: if a partial sum gives 11, 22, or 33, stop the reduction there.

Common Error 1: Reducing November

Many people write "11 = 2" and miss the master number. November is the 11th month. 11 is a master number. Preserve it at step 2.

Method Variant

Some numerologists add all the digits of the full date directly, without prior component reduction: 17/11/1985 = 1 + 7 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 33 = master number 33

This variant sometimes gives different results. The component method (separate reduction of day, month, and year) is the most widespread and most recommended, as it better preserves master numbers.

Common Error 2: Using the Common Name Rather Than the Birth Name

Numerology uses the full name as it appears on the birth certificate, including all given names even if never used. If your birth certificate reads "Robert James" but everyone calls you "Jim," the calculation uses ROBERT JAMES.

Common Error 3: Handling Hyphenated or Multi-Part Names

Treat hyphenated names as continuous (MARY-ANN = M-A-R-Y-A-N-N). Include all middle names.

Y's treatment varies among numerologists. The most common rule: Y is a vowel when it is the only vowel in a syllable or when it is pronounced as a vowel (e.g., LYNN = Y counts as a vowel). Otherwise, it is a consonant.


Calculation 4: The Personality Number

The personality number represents the impression you give others — your social facade or persona.

The Debate: Reduce or Not Reduce?

Should You Always Preserve Master Numbers?

The tradition is clear: 11, 22, and 33 are not reduced. Some numerologists add 44 to this list. Others stop at 22.

The practical question: if your life path is 11, you carry both the qualities of 11 (elevated spiritual intuition, sensitivity, vision) AND the qualities of 2 (cooperation, sensitivity, diplomacy). Both readings are valid and complementary.

Should You Preserve 11 at an Intermediate Step or Only the Final?
